Attention or Disobedience?

Postby tamm32 » Sat Oct 14, 2006 4:45 pm

How do you know when a child is acting out to get attention or is just being disobedient?

My step child has gotten in trouble at least 3 times for the same situation. But I still continue to see the same behavior. Is this a call for attention or just being disobedient?

I know sometimes when a person wants attention they'll do what ever it takes even if it is something they know is wrong (and in this situaiton my step child knows its wrong but does it anyway). I think these type of people have issues that need to be addressed (counseling).

I'm no expert but I'll throw in my two cents.

Disobedience is a natural thing in children. Put it into perspective with our relationship with God. Makes you think, huh?

It becomes a problem when there is aggressiveness, verbal outbursts and breaking rules - not only at home but in school or other social settings.

There is a fine line between a cry for attention and just spreading their wings. It is deliberate and done with meanness? Sometimes that could be a desire to show you who is in control - and it's not you. Other times, if if takes you away from something else in the home, then it could be a cry for attention and time needed with a parent or the family.
In the same way, prayer is essential in this ongoing warfare. Pray hard and long. Pray for your brothers and sisters. Keep your eyes open. Keep each other's spirits up so that no one falls behind or drops out. - Ephesians 6:18

Does it really matter how the behavior is labeled? - if what they are doing is wrong - it is wrong! Rules need to be established & consequences followed through consistently. Pray without ceasing & give your children attention. If you are questioning if a child is acting a certain way because they want more attention - Do they need more attention? One way kids know that they are loved & cared for, is that there are rules of behavior & that they need to be followed. Good luck & I will pray.
