My promotion finally went through!

My promotion finally went through!

After more than a year of wrangling, it is approved as of today (I've been doing the work of the job title for almost 3 years - this is them catching my title, and pay, up to what I actually been doing since a couple weeks after they hired me).

congrats.

Do you get three years of back pay?

I wish - the new pay scale will be retroactive to March 1 of this year (I ended up with a 45% raise - I was supposed to get a 62% raise, but they rolled it back at teh last minute due to budget issues).

I think I only got it now because I am a finalist for another position elsewhere that would have paid much more (it is a small field and everyone knows what everyone else is up to, so they know it was getting close at the other place), and they figured out it would cost them more to outsource the work I do that they can't otherwise do in-house.

That's pretty good these days. I just got my pay cut 7.5% and they eliminated the company match on the 401(k) plan.

I provided a number of people here a lesson on how to do things.

I never complained. I took on every extra duty anyone asked. I volunteered for things no one else wanted to do. I had a great attitude and top quality performance on everything. I was the first one here and last one gone every day.

A few months before my second annual review, I sat down with the personnel people and the pay scales and calmly showed them that I was doing work at the "x" grade instead of the "z" grade I was in, and said that I really had to insist that the situation be rectified - offering to go half way there that year and the rest at the third year review. At the second annual review, I was rebuffed on my proposal and told that I could only be given a 4% raise (which many others got as well). I told them I was sorry to hear that and that I would have to be looking elsewhere, after which I very openly started interviewing elsewhere (while maintaining the work quality here - other than all of the extra unpaid hours) - as well as emptying my office of all my personal effects (family photos, trinkets, etc.).

As it became cIear that I was really planning to go, and it looked fairly certain that I would get the other position, the scramble started as to what could be done to keep me. I was expecting an offer shortly, at almost double my previous pay.

Forgive me if I've missed something, but I don't see anything in your post that gives God any thanks and glory for your promotion. What I discern is a man who feels he has earned this entirely by his own efforts (as described) :? Are you sharing this news with us so that we can thank Him on your behalf? Happy to do that!

FaithHopeJoy - Under the circumstances, I feel somewhat like Joseph rising in Egypt, right before the famine. God's fingerprints are all over my whole life (I suppose it should not ever go without saying, so thanks for the reminder)

km,
Congrats on your promotion, it is great to know that even at your age, there is still stuff to look forward to.
Just kidding, I'm happy for you.
I got demoted to secretary for a couple of weeks, so I'm stuck indoors in front of a computer all day. - it is totally boring and I despise project financing. But in this economy - work is work and I feel pretty lucky that we still have even the possibility of new projects.
Hope the rest of your family stuff worked out OK. :D

The rest of the family stuff seems to have taken a turn for the worse. Not sharply, but noticeably.

The provocative snappish disrespectful/emasculating behavior & tone has ramped up.
I am having increasing trouble tolerating it civilly.

km, I am really sorry to hear that. I am continuing to pray for both of you.

Did something specific happen that may have caused the escalation? Did anything change? Is she threatened by your promotion?

Personal question here, but does your wife work outside of the home? Just curious. When I worked in an office with a group of women that were verbally degrading about their husbands and boyfriends-I tended to follow suit. That was years ago. After a girly-gripe session I would come home and think and say very uncivil, demasculating things to my husband. It started off as joking but with very mean undertones.

Tell me if I am being too nosey.

j3jean - she is in teaching (both teacher and administrator in her current position), very accomplished in her specialty field. Education is, of course, a thoroughly female dominated profession - so everything in it is largely a "hen party".

I am not certain whether I would be unhappy or happy if it were that she were threatened by my situation.
